Most people try on a bold pair of earrings, look in the mirror, and wonder why the whole outfit suddenly feels heavy. The problem is rarely the earrings. It is almost always what is happening around the neck. A statement earring needs quiet space to work against, and the simplest way to create that space is to keep your neckline simple.
Reach for a clean crew neck, a soft scoop, a fine knit roll-neck or a well-cut shirt with the top button undone. Leave the beaded necklace, the layered chains and the oversized collar for another day. If you want something at the neck, a single fine chain or a small pendant sits low enough not to compete.
Statement earrings are designed to catch light, and hair falling over them hides the very thing you paid for. You do not need a severe updo. A low bun, a sleek ponytail, a loose half-up style or simply tucking one side behind the ear gives the earring room to move and sparkle.
If you love wearing your hair down, work with it rather than against it. Keep the front smooth so the earrings sit in front of the hair, not buried in it, and pin back the section nearest your face. Textured, voluminous curls can look wonderful with earrings, but choose shorter drops so the two do not tangle. A little finishing cream or oil on the ends also stops static pulling strands towards your jewellery.
The most beautiful earring in the world is no good if you are counting the minutes until you can take it off. Weight is the single most overlooked factor in statement jewellery, and handcrafted pieces vary enormously because stone size, setting style and metal all add up.
As a rough guide, anything up to about 8 grams per earring can usually be worn comfortably for a full day. Beyond that, you will feel it by mid-afternoon, and heavy earrings worn often can gradually stretch the piercing.
Gemstone jewellery comes alive when the stone echoes something already in your face — the warmth of your skin, the depth of your eyes, the tone of your hair. Cool-toned skin tends to glow with sterling silver, white gold, amethyst, blue topaz, moonstone and labradorite. Warmer skin often suits yellow gold, rose gold, citrine, garnet, carnelian and smoky quartz.
If you are unsure, hold the earring against your jaw in natural daylight rather than bathroom lighting. If your skin looks even and your eyes look brighter, it is the right one. If your complexion looks grey or shadowed, put it back. This test never fails, and it works just as well in a shop as it does at home.
Statement earrings are more versatile than they get credit for. For daytime, pair medium drops or textured hoops with a plain shirt and let them do the talking. For an evening, swap to something longer, add a slick of lipstick and keep everything else exactly as it was.
If you are heading straight from work to something dressier, carry a small pair of studs in your bag and change in the loos. A quick switch of earrings reads as a complete outfit change, and it costs you thirty seconds.
Handcrafted earrings often use softer stones and hand-set claws, so a little care goes a long way. Put your earrings on last, after perfume, hairspray and moisturiser have settled, and take them off first at the end of the night. Store them in a soft pouch or a lined box with the pairs kept apart, so stones do not scratch one another.
Clean gemstones with a dry, soft cloth rather than a liquid dip, and check the backs and claws every few weeks. If a fitting feels loose, stop wearing the piece until it is tightened. Looked after properly, a well-made pair of statement earrings will outlive most of the clothes you wear them with — and that is exactly the point of buying handmade.
